· Rotameters are mechanical devices that allow you to measure and/or to control flow. These devices can be used with both gases and liquids. A float rises on top of the media along a tapered tube whose diameter increases from bottom to top. By reading the position of the float against a scale the user can determine the flow rate. · Metal tube rotameters are usually used for applications where the pressure exceeds that possible with a glass or acrylic tube or where the media is corrosive or dangerous. The float is magnetically coupled to an indicator that allows the user to read the meter. Sizing rotameters is sometimes more art than science. · Glass tube rotameters allow the user to see the media flowing through the meter. Glass is relatively chemically inert, reacting to only a few agents. It neither adds nor detracts from the sample while offering good visibility. Choosing the right size meter is often more complicated than it would first appear. · Acrylic tube rotameters offer the user good visibility and low price. Because they are not as resistant to corrosion as other materials, their use is limited. · Flow switches are used to note the increase or decrease of flow past a designated set point of either a gas or liquid. Switches can be set to either open or close at the set point.
